Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has delivered a sharp critique of the Madani administration, branding it a "failed government" during his presidential address at the party's Annual General Meeting in Shah Alam. His remarks aimed at the government's performance over the past two years signal escalating political tensions as Malaysia edges closer to the 16th General Election.
Muhyiddin characterized the government as shifting from a "syndrome of serial lies" to a "syndrome of serial failures," casting doubt on the Madani leadership's capacity to rejuvenate the economy and provide effective solutions to pressing issues, including the fluctuating ringgit, rising cost of living, and sluggish stock market.
“For two years, our economy has not shown exceptional performance to benefit the people. Businesses at shopping malls and ‘warungs’ (stalls) are struggling, and there’s no clear strategy for recovery,” Muhyiddin asserted. He also took aim at Budget 2025, claiming it lacked vision for economic rejuvenation.
The introduction of targeted subsidies, coupled with new tax implementations, further drew Muhyiddin's ire. “Not only did they pull subsidies, but they also raised taxes. From which school did they learn this?” he remarked, emphasizing public's mistrust of the Madani government and frustration over surging costs of living.
Muhyiddin also responded to the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) grading the Madani administration a grade 'D'. He quipped, “We would have given them an 'F',” a statement met with applause from his audience.
Challenges Within Bersatu
On another front, Muhyiddin conceded that Bersatu faces challenges in gaining traction among non-Malay voters. He noted that while Malay and Bumiputera support remains strong, the party cannot rely solely on this demographic to secure federal power. “Bersatu cannot be so dependent entirely on Malays and Bumiputeras to win electoral votes. We must embrace a broader nationalistic vision,” he emphasized.
Addressing alleged factionalism within Bersatu, Muhyiddin categorically denied the existence of internal camps, warning against divisive narratives. “This nonsense will not be tolerated. Unity within the party is utmost importance ” he declared.
A Call to Action
Concluding his address, Muhyiddin called for a change in government, urging Malaysians to hold the Madani administration accountable in the next general election. Meanwhile, Bersatu unveiled a flood disaster fund, underscoring its commitment to addressing immediate community needs amidst political maneuvering.
With tensions rising, Muhyiddin’s fiery rhetoric signals Perikatan Nasional’s readiness to position itself as a credible alternative to Madani’s leadership, setting the stage for a heated electoral battle.
With his party's involvement in the undemocratic 'Sheraton Move' coup, past questionable leadership, corruption cases, and the disappearance of his son-in-law to evade the MACC, can Muhyiddin rise to the occasion and win electoral support in GE16 to overtake the government?
