BERSATU President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin vehemently denied claims by Selat Kelang State Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari that Selangor Bersatu is controlled by a vicious "cartel." This accusation, according to Muhyiddin, has forced him to support Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari of rival party PKR.
Muhyiddin responded to Rashid's claim by suggesting that Rashid himself is the one creating a cartel within the party at the state level. He accused Rashid of stirring up these issues to divert attention from his own judgmental error in supporting the state government led by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.
"Rashid said there is a cartel, but this party operates based on the constitution," stated the former prime minister. “There are rules. If there is a cartel, it means that he (Rashid) is the cartel.”
Muhyiddin emphasized that Bersatu complies fully with its constitution and has rules that must be followed. He criticized Rashid for making irresponsible accusations and urged him not to make excuses for his mistake.
Earlier, Utusan Malaysia reported Rashid as saying that Selangor Bersatu was controlled by a "cartel group," led by individuals who had recently joined the party. Rashid cited this as a reason for shifting his support to Amirudin in the state assembly.
Rashid, who announced his support for Amirudin's administration on March 6, stated that he did so without any coercion and believed it would benefit the people of Selat Kelang by contributing to a stable government.
With this move, Rashid became the seventh Bersatu lawmaker at both parliamentary and state levels to express support for the unity government alliance, which includes PH and BN.
Muhyiddin, speaking after submitting the party's proposed constitutional amendment to the Registrar of Societies (ROS) in Putrajaya, hoped that there would be no obstacles to the approval of the amendment. He stated that the submission was made in accordance with procedures and regulations required by ROS.
On March 2, Bersatu approved an amendment to the party's constitution to prevent its elected representatives from shifting their support to rivals. The decision, made during an extraordinary general assembly, was supported unanimously by Bersatu delegates present.
Muhyiddin expressed hope that the ROS would process the amendment as soon as possible, reflecting the wishes of the party members as approved in the general assembly.
The amendment, aimed at preventing elected representatives from switching sides, comes amidst a backdrop of political maneuvering within Bersatu and the wider Malaysian political landscape. The move to shore up support and prevent defections underscores the challenges facing political parties in maintaining unity and stability.
Muhyiddin's strong rebuttal of the "cartel" accusation and his efforts to ensure party loyalty through constitutional amendments highlight the tensions and power struggles within Bersatu. The party's ability to navigate these challenges will have implications not only for its internal cohesion but also for the broader political landscape in Malaysia.
As Bersatu continues to grapple with internal divisions and external pressures, the party's future direction and its role within the larger political framework remain uncertain. The outcome of these developments will shape the political landscape in Malaysia for the foreseeable future.
