Muhyiddin urges end to political appointments in Tabung Haji leadership

THE government should stop appointing politicians or individuals with active political interests to leadership positions in Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH), said former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said the move was necessary to prevent political influence from affecting investment decisions and the management of funds belonging to TH depositors, in line with recommendations made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI).

Speaking during a special Dewan Rakyat sitting, the Pagoh MP said appointments to TH’s board of directors, senior management and its subsidiaries should be based on merit, professional expertise and integrity.

He said candidates should have relevant experience in areas such as finance, banking, investment, law and syariah, while undergoing a strict “fit and proper person” assessment before being appointed.

“This is important to ensure those appointed are free from conflicts of interest, integrity issues or external political pressure,” he said.

Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, also called for a comprehensive independent forensic audit of TH to be carried out immediately, with the process completed within a year.

He said the audit was needed to examine weaknesses in governance and possible leakages involving the management of TH funds.

“An independent forensic audit is important to trace the movement of funds, identify possible fraud, abuse of power and negligence that may have taken place.

“Those responsible for any losses involving TH funds, whether through fraud, abuse of power or negligence, must face legal action,” he said.

Muhyiddin also urged the government to fully implement the recommendations outlined in the RCI report, including strengthening the Tabung Haji Act 1995, improving regulatory oversight by Bank Negara Malaysia or relevant authorities, establishing an independent investment committee, and reviewing TH’s investment portfolio to ensure more prudent and syariah-compliant management. – August 11, 2026
