Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, chairman of Perikatan Nasional, criticized the government's tendency to shift blame onto the Opposition for the fall of the ringgit. Speaking at his Pagoh constituency's Chinese New Year celebration, he emphasized the government's responsibility to own up to its failures instead of pointing fingers.
"It is unreasonable for the government to blame the Opposition for everything when they are the ones in power. They have the responsibility, role, and power to manage the country. They have to bear the responsibility. Whatever failures or weakness come from the government's own inability to manage the country," he stated.
Muhyiddin highlighted that the lack of trust in the government has contributed to the current economic situation. "The issue is a lack of confidence and faith in the government and its leaders in managing the country and its economy. It has been a year since they have been in power, and the people can see and evaluate for themselves," he added.
Responding to Umno former Minister Salleh Said Keruak's statement blaming the Opposition for the economic woes, Muhyiddin disagreed, stating that continuous talks of toppling the government by the Opposition have affected investors' confidence.
Regarding claims by Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal that several Bersatu MPs would declare their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Muhyiddin dismissed the claims, calling Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz an "irresponsible party member" who acted against their policy. He emphasized that he had not heard of any such plans.
Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz, among six Bersatu MPs who had previously declared their support for Anwar, claimed that the MPs decided to leave the party due to feeling disappointed and underappreciated.
Muhyiddin's remarks come amidst a backdrop of political turbulence and economic challenges in Malaysia. The country has been grappling with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with political uncertainties and a recent spike in commodity prices, including the cost of crude oil, a key export for Malaysia.
The fall of the ringgit, Malaysia's currency, has been a cause for concern, affecting the cost of imports and potentially leading to inflationary pressures. The government's response to these challenges has been closely scrutinized, with calls for greater accountability and transparency in economic management.
Muhyiddin's comments reflect a broader sentiment among some Malaysians who believe that the government should take more responsibility for its actions and decisions, rather than shifting blame onto others. As Malaysia navigates these complex issues, there is a growing need for constructive dialogue and cooperation among political parties to address the country's economic and social challenges.
Furthermore, Muhyiddin's criticism underscores the importance of unity and stability in Malaysia's political landscape. With the upcoming Parliament sitting, scheduled to begin on Feb 26, the country faces a critical juncture that will shape its future trajectory.
The decision of several Bersatu MPs to declare their support for Anwar Ibrahim has added another layer of complexity to Malaysia's political dynamics. This development highlights the shifting allegiances and power dynamics within the political arena, signaling a potential realignment of political forces.
As Malaysia navigates these challenges, it is crucial for political leaders to prioritize the interests of the nation above personal or party agendas. Transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance are essential to rebuilding trust and confidence in Malaysia's political institutions.
Ultimately, Muhyiddin's message serves as a reminder that the government's actions and decisions have a direct impact on the lives of Malaysians. It is imperative for leaders to heed this call and work together towards a brighter and more prosperous future for Malaysia.
