Mujahid takes legal action against PAS over LGBT support allegations

KUALA LUMPUR – Amanah vice-president Datuk Seri Mujahid Yusof Rawa has initiated legal action against PAS after the Islamist party alleged that he is a supporter of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

Mujahid, who was the religious affairs minister during the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration, said that a letter of demand for defamation had been sent to PAS today through law firm Messrs Akrah Hizri Azad & Azmir.

“The PAS office has confirmed their receival of the letter,” he said in a Facebook post today.

The demands stated in the letter include asking PAS to erase the Facebook posting on its official page which aired the allegations, retract its accusations, apologise to Mujahid, and compensate him for “damaging (his) reputation”.

“I will not hesitate to take similar legal action against any other PAS leaders who have not tired of writing slanderous claims (which) connect me to the LGBT (community),” Mujahid said.

On October 16, PAS had posted a statement which asserted that Mujahid’s meeting with transgender welfare activist Nisha Ayub in 2018, during his ministerial tenure, was an attempt to “garner support” for the LGBT community.

Following backlash over the duo holding talks, Mujahid had stressed in August 2018 that the meeting did not indicate his approval of the community, as he had only accepted Nisha’s invitation to discuss issues plaguing the transgender community to see how religious institutes could play a role in alleviating the problems. – The Vibes, October 27, 2022
