A 17-year-old girl almost drowned when the car she was in skidded into a lake, but thanks to the brave action of one student, she escaped the ordeal.
Meet 22-year-old Ahmad Nur Irfan Amirrudin, the Social Work student who jumped into the UNIMAS lake to save a girl from drowning. At that time, Ahmad was looking for a university program checkpoint before he saw a blue car on the surface of the lake around 10:30 AM yesterday (July 21).
Ahmad was prompted to jump into the water after he saw the victim trying to get out of the car, and out of concern for her safety, Ahmad managed to pull her to safety while his friends went to get the auxiliary police.
Unfortunately, the 17-year-old girl’s mother, who was the driver, did not make it.
Kota Samarahan District Police Chief, Superintendent Damataries Lautin, said that the deceased victim has been identified as Nur Shareefah Lusia Abdullah, 50. According to the police, upon reaching the lake area near the UNIMAS roundabout, the victim’s car was believed to have been parked by the side of the road shortly before she suddenly lost control and skidded into the lake.
According to Ahmad, who had received training as a first responder by the UNIMAS Operations Control Centre (PKOT) and the SISPA Corps, it was his first time encountering such a matter. He was terrified, nervous, worried, and scared all at once.
In a video statement posted by UNIMAS on its Facebook page, the management expressed its gratitude to Ahmad and other members of the public who were involved in the rescue.
