Munich Airport halted aircraft handling on Wednesday morning after the German Weather Service (DWD) issued a severe weather warning.
The operating company said in response to an enquiry that a 30-minute handling halt had been declared because of the weather conditions.
"This is being done for safety reasons to protect passengers and staff from electrical discharges," the company said.
"During this time, aircraft must not be loaded or unloaded, and passengers cannot board or disembark," the airport said. "This situation usually also causes delays to regular flight operations."
Display boards showed that air traffic was restricted due to the weather. As a result, around 100 take-offs and landings were cancelled, the airport said.
Earlier in the morning, the DWD had issued a warning for the region north-east of Munich, forecasting thunderstorms with heavy downpours, as well as gusts of wind and hail.
