SANDAKAN: A Malaysia Day mural celebrating unity and harmony has been completed at SMK St Mary here by former student Cai Xiang.
Cai, 33, who goes by the artistic name Sumi Spirit and left the school in 2011, said the mural depicts harmony among Malaysia’s communities and carries the message “Bersama Kita Berkarya”.
He said the idea was conceived about two years ago and finally realised with support from the school, donors and other contributors, with the mural taking about six days to complete.
School Board Chairman Dalius Lucius Lobinjang said the mural was more than an artwork as it symbolised unity in diversity and reflected the values promoted by the school.
Former student Datuk Md Afendi Hamdan, who contributed to the project, said such initiatives could strengthen unity and encouraged students to spend less time on gadgets and instead interact, play sports and build friendships with people from different backgrounds.
