Danny Murphy was unimpressed by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp's sarcastic comments about his former teammate Didi Hamann.

Klopp called out Istanbul hero Hamann for claiming Liverpool had lost their "spark".

“The part about him responding to Dietmar Hamann in the first place saying, 'Oh a fantastic source, well respected everywhere', in a sarcastic way, I think that was uncalled for," Murphy told talkSPORT.

“I don't think that was needed. Jurgen Klopp is far more intelligent than that and he doesn't need to be riled up by former players' comments.

“He's frustrated, he's on edge. I think he could have dealt with that better and just moved it on.

“What he doesn't want to do every week is go into press conferences and start responding to what former Liverpool players have said, because you'll always find someone who says something negative.

“Dietmar is a friend of mine and he's a fantastic guy, and he's very honest, but I find it strange, I don't know why he said 'five years ago' – Liverpool were still playing that football last season. 'Up until this season', he should have said.

“But what he said wasn't particularly wrong, but Klopp is edgy, he's fractious. He's not happy with what he's seeing, he wants to do better and he's getting in front of the press and being agitated and saying things he'll probably look back on and think, 'Why did I respond to that?'

“I don't think he'd be embarrassed by it, but he should have taken it better.

“Dietmar is entitled to think what he thinks, he's a Champions League winner for Liverpool.

“But I don't think the journalist should have quoted Hamann, that's my opinion. I think the journalist should be better than that, more intelligent than that.

“I loved what Klopp said about 'ask your own question' – he'd have known what Hamann said.

“I thought it was right what he said to the journalist, but in terms of responding to Dietmar, I think he could have dealt with that a lot better."
