Meta, the corporate overlords behind social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, has introduced Muse Image, a new AI tool that lets people generate pictures using anyone’s profile pictures and public Instagram posts without telling them.
Available through the Meta AI app as well as in WhatsApp and Instagram for US-based users, Muse Image is yet another text-to-image generators coming out these days, except that it can use social media accounts to generate AI slop. Free for most users with additional subscription plans available, Meta plans to add it to Facebook and Messenger soon too.
Muse Image also comes with a feature that lets anyone create AI-generated slop using people’s Instagram photos. You won’t even need to opt-in for this; anyone and everyone with a public Instagram account is automatically opted in. A Muse Image user can then get the chatbot to create AI slop photos using the photos and posts from any public Instagram account.
Unsurprisingly, many users were quick to show their backlash, as Meta not only automatically enrolled everyone with a public account, but also didn’t notify users that their accounts can be used in such a manner. Everyone from users and privacy activists to even the Creative Artists Agency representing actors and artistes have condemned the move, citing concerns about lack of consent to being used by AI models.
Based on Meta’s own Help Center FAQs:
If you have a public account, other Instagram users may be able to create new reels, posts or stories that reuse part or all of your published photos, videos or reels in features like remix, sequence, templates and stickers. In addition, people may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta.
At time of writing, the Muse Image feature has mostly rolled out to US-based users only. However, if and when it does become available in Malaysia, the best way to avoid being used as data for AI training is to just go private.
If you need to remain being public though, you can head to your Settings page and turn off ‘Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta’ under ‘Sharing and reuse’; these settings will only become available to you when Muse Image becomes available.
