Renowned Muslim convert preacher Prof Mohd Ridhuan Tee Abdullah has thrown down the gauntlet to Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, daring her to a debate on the controversial topic of vernacular schools. The issue has sparked heated debate, with allegations that Chinese vernacular schools are fueling racial tensions against Malays, posing a challenge to national unity.
Muafakat Nasional's deputy president questioned why Kok, who is also DAP's vice-chairman, took offense at claims that vernacular schools promote racism, as stated by former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) professor Prof Datuk Teo Kok Seong.
"There's no need to challenge UMNO Youth... they should challenge us, as we have all the evidence," Prof Ridhuan said during a media briefing at the Brickfields district police headquarters (IPD) in Kuala Lumpur on March 15, while Teo was giving his statement to the police.
“I challenge the MP (Kok) who raised the issue in Parliament to a debate... I issue this challenge so that the truth prevails.”
Kok, a six-term Seputeh MP, had urged the police to investigate Teo's TikTok statement during an interview with the Malay language news portal Merdeka Times, which is owned by another well-known Muslim preacher, Firdaus Wong Wai Hung. This led to Teo being investigated under Section 505 of the Penal Code for public mischief and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for abuse of network facilities.
However, United Rights of Malaysian Party Interim Council (Urimai) chairman Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy believes that resorting to police action against Teo will not resolve the politicization of vernacular schools, which have been targeted by Malay nationalists “from the time of political independence until today.”
Unlike Kok, the former Penang chief minister II prefers engaging Teo in a rational and intellectual manner. MCA Youth also highlighted that both Chinese and vernacular schools are protected by the Federal Constitution.
Ridhuan proposes that the debate be held on neutral grounds, where his opponent "does not enjoy legal immunity." He suggested venues like Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) or anywhere outside the Parliament building.
The call for a debate reflects the deep-seated issues surrounding vernacular schools and the broader conversation about national unity and racial harmony in Malaysia.
Despite the polarizing nature of the topic, both sides seem eager to engage in a constructive dialogue to address the concerns raised about vernacular schools. The proposed debate, if it materializes, could provide a platform for a nuanced discussion that goes beyond mere accusations and counter-accusations.
Prof Ridhuan's challenge to Kok indicates a willingness to confront the issue head-on and present his arguments in a public forum. This could lead to a more informed and enlightened discourse, helping to dispel misconceptions and foster a greater understanding of the complexities surrounding vernacular schools.
On the other hand, Kok's advocacy for police action against Teo reflects a different approach, one that seeks to address the issue through legal means. While this approach may be necessary to uphold the law, it also raises questions about the limits of free speech and academic freedom in Malaysia.
Ultimately, the debate over vernacular schools is not just about education policy; it is also about the kind of society Malaysia aspires to be – one that embraces diversity and promotes inclusivity or one that is divided along racial lines. The outcome of this debate could have far-reaching implications for Malaysia's future and its ongoing efforts to build a more cohesive and harmonious society.
