For Muslims, Ramadan is a time to thank Allah for all the blessings He gives them every day - not just food and drink, but clothes, good health, work, family, friends. It helps them, too, to think of those, especially other Muslims, who need the help of others just to survive. Muslims remember the night in Ramadan when the angel Jibril revealed the first verses of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.

All during the month of Ramadan special prayers take place after the evening prayer, which involve recitation of the Quran. By the end of the month, the whole of the Quran will have been recited. Many Muslims make every special effort to perform these extra, Tarawih prayers throughout the month of Ramadan in the mosques. Fulfilling the obligations of one's religion is considered as natural process.

Permit me to take you for walkabouts at a mosque. The first thing you notice inside any mosque is just how simple it is. No elaborate side chapels, statues or paintings - just a carpeted space for prayer. The mosque may be big or small, but the interior plan is pretty much the same: an open space with the directions of Mecca pointed out on one of the walls. The Arabic word for a mosque is masjid. One can only marvel at the sheer number of worshipers on Friday prayers, gathering in the mosque to pray together as a community.

What brought all these worshippers to the mosque was the Azan, the Call to Prayer. Five times a day the prayer-caller announces from the minaret of every mosque that it is time for prayer, time to set aside all the cares of life to worship the creator of Life, Allah.

The reward for a good practising Muslim is a place in the thereafter, Heaven. Muslims are given an image of heaven in the Holy Quran.
