A mosque is a place of worship for followers of Islam. It serves as a holy place where Muslims can come together for prayers as well as centre of information, education, marriage proclamation, refuge, and even dispute settlement. Muslims briefly kneel and touch their foreheads to the ground as a sign of total submission to the will of Allah. It is mandatory for every healthy Muslim male to perform their weekly Friday congregation and even encouraged to perform their daily 5 times prayers at the nearby mosques.

In my recent visit to Zamboanga City, whilst driving along the greenery countryside on MCLL Highway at Pasobolong, my wife, Zarina and I were mesmerised to notice a majestic mosque being built. I requested the staffers of the City Mayor of the Local Government of Isabela City de Basilan, namely Yhang Macusang & Mojahed Cosain to stop by at the roadside. They told me that the landmark, Sadik Grand Mosque which is going to be the biggest mosque in the Philippines, with a mall, hotel, convention centre and residential community.

The 50-hectare Sadik Grand Mosque started construction in 2022, for the Muslim community and is owned by Sadik Sali, the brother of Hon. Governor of Tawi-Tawi Island Province.

I have already visited the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque of Cotabato, situated in Cotabato City partly funded by the Philippines Government and the Sultanate of Brunei, which is currently the largest mosque in the Philippines. I am amazed that in this mosque at the break of dawn, people can watch the sunrise and in the evening to view the sunset with the white stone walls bathed in a rainbow of multi-colours. However, upon completion of construction, Sadik Grand Mosque will become the largest mosque.

According to local folklore, the first mosque & oldest in the Philippines & Southeast Asia was built by the Arab trader & missionary Sheikh Makhdum Karim at Simunul, TawiTawi.
