Members and leaders of the Rashtriya Alapsankyak Arakshan Morcha on Friday submitted a memorandum to Phagwara SDM demanding that the cow be declared the national animal of the country and seeking stricter laws against cow slaughter, smuggling and mob violence linked to the issue.
The memorandum, addressed to the President of India, was submitted under the leadership of Sarwar Ghulam Saba, Convenor of the organisation, during a peaceful demonstration held several activists participated in the programme.
In the memorandum, the organization urged the Union Government to impose a complete ban on cow slaughter across the country and implement a uniform national law against slaughterhouses and illegal smuggling of cows. The activists also demanded strict measures to curb incidents of mob lynching and communal violence allegedly carried out in the name of cow slaughter.
Addressing media persons, Sarwar Ghulam Saba said that incidents of mob violence, social unrest and communal tension frequently surface across the country over allegations related to cow slaughter. He stated that declaring the cow as the National Animal and enacting strict anti-lynching laws could help prevent violence and strengthen communal harmony and brotherhood in society.
The delegation further appealed to the Union Government to issue clear guidelines to all state governments for preventing communal disturbances arising out of disputes related to cow slaughter and smuggling.
After submitting the memorandum to the SDM office, the protesters dispersed peacefully. Police officials maintained that the law and order situation remained completely peaceful during the programme and no untoward incident was reported.
