My Best Friends Wedding recap

It has been nearly three decades since audiences first witnessed Julianne Potter spiral through love, jealousy and regret in My Best Friend’s Wedding. With Sony Pictures now developing a sequel and Past Lives filmmaker Celine Song set to write the script, here is a recap of all the major highlights from the 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding.

A defining movie of the genre, the romantic comedy follows Julianne Potter (played by Julia Roberts), a food critic who realises she is in love with her best friend Michael O’Neal (played by Dermot Mulroney), just as he announces his wedding to Kimberly Wallace (played by Cameron Diaz).

Directed by P. J. Hogan, My Best Friend’s Wedding became a commercial and cultural success upon release, praised for subverting classic romantic comedy tropes and offering a more honest take on love, timing and consequence. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score (James Newton Howard), along with three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical (for Roberts).

My Best Friend’s Wedding recap: The call that starts the chaos

Julianne Potter and Michael O’Neal have been best friends for years, sharing a deep bond built on familiarity and emotional dependence. So much so that they even made a pact: if neither of them is married by the age of 28, they would marry each other.

However, days before Julianne turns 28, Michael tells her he is getting married in four days and wants her by his side for the wedding. The call shifts something in Julianne. She realises that her feelings for Michael may not be purely platonic. She also convinces herself that no one understands him better than she does.

Determined to act before it is too late, Julianne decides to travel to Chicago, not just to attend the wedding, but to stop it.

Kimmy, the rival

When Julianne arrives in Chicago, she meets Kimberly Wallace, aka Kimmy, Michael’s fiancée. Julianne quickly realises that, contrary to her expectations, Kimmy is not a snob; she is kind, open-hearted and genuinely in love with Michael.

Kimmy warmly welcomes Julianne, treating her as an important part of Michael’s life rather than a threat.

This complicates Julianne’s plan. There is no clear flaw in Kimmy that she can use to her advantage. Instead, Julianne finds herself growing more insecure, recognising that she is up against someone who truly cares for Michael.

Yet she persists with her plan. She manipulates situations and creates misunderstandings between the couple in her effort to break them apart. Her actions blur the line between romantic pursuit and moral compromise, making her one of the most complex protagonists in a mainstream romantic comedy movie.

My Best Friend’s Wedding recap: The infamous kiss

After learning about her schemes, George Downes (played by Rupert Everett), Julianne’s gay best friend, urges her to be honest about her feelings instead of trying to disrupt the wedding. Taking his advice, Julianne comes clean to Michael, telling him that she has been trying to sabotage his wedding. She kisses him after admitting her love for him.

The moment creates immediate chaos. Kimmy witnesses the kiss and leaves in distress. Michael follows her, while Julianne chases after Michael, trying to explain herself. In the middle of the confusion, Julianne calls George and tells him what has happened. It is in this moment that George asks her, “But who is chasing you?”, forcing Julianne to confront the reality of the situation.

What happens in the final moments?

Michael eventually makes it clear that he has no romantic feelings for Julianne and that he truly loves Kimmy. Realising the consequences of her actions, Julianne approaches Kimmy and takes responsibility. In a moment of acceptance and emotional clarity, she confesses her feelings for Michael but also acknowledges that he loves Kimmy, not her.

The romantic movie closes on an emotionally satisfying note. Michael and Kimmy’s wedding ceremony goes as planned. Meanwhile, Julianne is left to process the fact that love cannot be forced, especially when it is realised too late.

In the final moments, George attends the wedding to support Julianne. Before the credits roll, the two share a quiet dance. It is a scene that symbolises companionship, healing and a different kind of love.

What to expect from the sequel?

According to her interview with Variety, Julia Roberts is already in discussions to reprise her role. She confirmed that producers are “talking to” her about returning, signalling that the sequel may bring back familiar faces from the 1997 classic.

Cast details and the director’s name are yet to be announced. There is no information about the plot. However, with Roberts potentially returning, it is expected to build on the original movie’s themes of love, timing and unresolved feelings. Whether it revisits Julianne years later or explores the marital life of Michael and Kimmy, the sequel is expected to continue the story rather than reboot it.

My Best Friend’s Wedding is available on Apple TV in Malaysia.
