There’s a particular kind of quiet that happens in an appraisal room. Aircon humming a bit too loud. A folder between you and your boss. And a question that sounds simple but never really is.
My ex-boss once told me I didn’t close a deal I closed.
In an appraisal, he asked, “What’s one achievement you’re proud of?”
I said, “Securing the ****flora account.”
He said, “You didn’t secure it. The GM signed the agreement.”
I remember sitting there blinking, trying to figure out if he actually believed that, or if he just needed it to be true.
Convenient how he forgot:
Who negotiated every term.
Who quietly tracked what competitors were offering.
Who sat and listened to the prospect’s cat story, because that’s how trust actually gets built.
Who the GM personally called in and asked, “What’s your gut-feel on this proposal?”
Mine. Not his.
But in that room, all of that got reduced to one signature that wasn’t mine.
Funny how that works. Months of calls, follow-ups, reading the client’s mood before they’d even said a word.
All of it invisible the second a pen touched paper. The signature became the story. Everything before it just… disappeared.
Here’s what I know now: some people don’t block you because you’re bad at your job.
They block you because you’re good at it. Good enough to make them nervous.
It took me a while to sit with that. It’s an uncomfortable thing to realise that your competence, not your incompetence, is what’s making someone uneasy.
There’s no HR policy for that. No performance review category called “too capable, please shrink.”
I didn’t get the promotion. But I kept the story. And now I help other people tell theirs.
Maybe that’s the real win. Not the title, not the signature but the fact that the work still belongs to the person who did it.
