Christmas is just around the corner. The malls are alive with bright Christmas decorations and the sounds of Christmas carols fill the air. With the ‘jingling of bells all the way’ ringing in my head, I asked myself, “Why do I make an effort to have get-together meals or exchange gifts during the Christmas season?” Am I just sucked into a worldly or meaningless practice? I do not think so.
I believe in a God who is the creator of this whole universe. He started it all. He gave the first human couple a paradise but paradise was soon lost (Genesis 3). The Creator did not give up. He gave the world the first Christmas gift of salvation through His one and only Son (John 3:16). Man’s first Christmas gift to baby Jesus was an offering of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Through the evolution of time, how the world celebrated Christmas began to differ. Many may have also lost the actual meaning of this celebration. Today, many still recognize it as a season of giving and feasting; and the business people have tapped onto this idea, resulting in the boom of sales in the malls and online shopping.
Today, I still treasure my first Christmas gift from God. Christmas reminds me of hope for our world despite the troubles that we see in our nation and the world at large. So, my Christmas gift to God is my fragile life. I live to reflect His reality and goodness in my life to our messed-up world so that they can also have renewed hope and joy in their lives. I live to be a blessing to people around me. I also choose to spend time to have meals and exchange gifts with family members and a number of close friends to appreciate them and remind ourselves of God’s gift of life to us. We now give because God first gave. Will we ever see true justice, peace and righteousness in this world? We will when we choose to receive the first Christmas gift from the Creator Himself and pass it on.
