The government is considering using MyDigital ID to verify that social media users are over 16, as part of efforts to protect children online.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is considering using MyDigital ID as a mechanism to verify the age of social media account owners.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the move aims to ensure users are not under 16, safeguarding children’s safety in the digital space.

She stated the government will discuss this further with platform providers.

Teo was responding to a supplementary question from Khoo Poay Tiong in the Dewan Rakyat.

She noted that imposing a minimum age for social media is not new, with countries like Australia having similar rules.

In a separate development, Teo revealed the MCMC received 812 complaints about fake news from January 1 to November 20.

These complaints were recorded through the Consumer Redress Portal.

Complaints included false information about government initiatives like STR and SARA.

Other complaints involved false information intended to create public anxiety and panic.
