Q: What first inspired you to start Provent Pest Control?
A: After years in the industry, we noticed pest problems were treated as a simple spray-and-kill job. But if you don't understand why the pests are there, they always come back. Q: How has the business evolved since you started?
A: What began as basic treatments has grown into comprehensive pest management covering cockroaches, rats, mosquitoes, termites and flies. We now look at the client's whole environment – sanitation, structure, access points – not just the pest itself. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the turning point: inspection, monitoring, treatment, prevention and client education, backed by trained personnel and proper compliance.
Q: What are the most common pest problems you see?
A: For F&B and commercial clients, cockroaches and rats top the list, usually tied to food, waste and drainage issues. Property managers face similar concerns, occasionally alongside bed bugs. The pest is often just a symptom; the real problem is poor waste management, water accumulation or structural gaps.
Q: Walk us through a typical inspection.
A: We don't reach for the spray first. Every job starts with understanding the pest's history, then a systematic check for harbourage, food and water sources, and entry points. Only then is treatment – baiting, targeted chemicals, trapping or exclusion – recommended, followed by monitoring. The real question isn't “did we kill the pests today?” It's “have we reduced the conditions that let them come back?”
Q: How do you compete with cheaper providers?
A: We don't compete on price. Clients aren't paying for a spray; they're paying for someone to identify the problem and prevent it from recurring. For businesses like restaurants or hotels, a pest issue can mean failed audits, reputational damage and lost customer trust – stakes far higher than the cost of a service.
Q: What's one thing you wish business owners understood?
A: Pest control should be preventive, not reactive. By the time pests are visible, the underlying conditions have often existed for a while, and waiting usually costs more. We don't want to be called only in a crisis. We want to help businesses prevent that crisis from happening in the first place.
