THE Commission on Appointments (CA) has approved the ad interim appointment of Gen. Antonio Nafarrete as chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), along with the appointments of 37 other generals, flag officers and senior military officers.
The confirmation came after the CA’s National Defense Committee endorsed the appointments, citing the officers’ qualifications, competence and readiness to assume higher positions in the military hierarchy.
Committee chairman Rep. Joboy Aquino II said the commission has full confidence in the 38 senior officers, noting that they had worked hard to earn their promotions and appointments.
Nafarrete’s confirmation comes as the military continues its modernization program amid growing security challenges in the region.
The AFP has acquired or upgraded unmanned systems, communications equipment and joint command-and-control capabilities.
It also aims to strengthen and expand the country’s maritime domain awareness, allowing the military to improve its ability to monitor and respond to developments in Philippine waters and surrounding areas.
The modernization program is expected to focus not only on acquiring new platforms and equipment but also on improving interoperability among the different branches of the AFP and enhancing their ability to operate as an integrated force.
The CA also approved the ad interim appointment of former congressman Brig. Gen. Michael Romero of the Philippine Air Force (Reserve).
