PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has denied Anwar Ibrahim’s claim that he signed a statutory declaration (SD) backing the PKR president as prime minister in return for an assurance that his court cases would be dropped.

“What Anwar says is absolutely untrue,” Najib said in a Facebook post, adding he never asked anyone for help to drop his cases.

Najib also questioned the opposition leader’s claim of having the support of 120 MPs.

“Then why did Istana Negara not appoint him as prime minister?

“And why did he not prove this support through votes in Parliament, including by way of thwarting the 2021 budget vote at the time?” he said.

Yesterday, Anwar claimed he rejected two SDs backing him as prime minister because he did not want to interfere with the judiciary.

He said the two SDs were signed by Najib and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, adding that after the declarations in support of him were signed, he was asked to give an assurance that Najib’s court cases would be discontinued.
