Najib Razak is expected to pay his RM50 million fine, according to a report, but his lawyer says he has yet to receive instructions on the payment.

PETALING JAYA: Imprisoned former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to pay the RM50 million fine imposed on him, The Edge reports.

However, his lawyer Muhammad Farhan Shafee reportedly said he had yet to receive any instructions regarding the payment.

Speaking to reporters when approached at court on Wednesday, Farhan said he was unaware of the latest developments concerning the matter.

“I am unsure what the current status is at the moment. I have received no instructions with regard to the fine just yet,” he said.

Farhan was at the court complex to attend proceedings in an unrelated case.

On Sept 18, it was announced that the Federal Territories Pardons Board, chaired by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim, had granted Najib permission to serve the remainder of his reduced prison sentence under house arrest, subject to payment of the RM50 million fine.

Following the announcement, Umno said it would launch a fundraising initiative to collect the amount to assist its former president.

Najib’s lead defence counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, had previously said his client did not have sufficient funds readily available to settle the fine, as his assets remained subject to freezing orders and enforcement proceedings.

In the SRC International Sdn Bhd case, the courts upheld Najib’s conviction for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering, together with his 12-year prison sentence and RM210 million fine.

However, in 2024, the Pardons Board, under the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, approved a reduction of his sentence to six years and his fine to RM50 million.
