Former prime minister Najib Razak will no longer spend his days languishing in Kajang Prison and will serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
The announcement was made by the Federal Territories Pardons Board, reported NST.
However, it comes with the condition that he pays the RM50 million fine imposed on him after he was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
The board also stated that Najib must comply with all conditions imposed for him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
This is the second time Najib’s royal pardon petition was brought before His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the Yang di-Pertua Agong, who chairs the board and deferred his application during the previous sitting on Sept 11.
The board also consists of Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh and Attorney-General Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, who sits as a statutory member on the board.
Najib was previously serving his sentence at Kajang Prison, where he was initially sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million.
In early 2024, the Pardons Board reduced his sentence to six years in prison and decreased the fine to RM50 million.
The former prime minister also fought hard to serve his sentence under house arrest by claiming an alleged royal addendum order allowed him to do so.
However, his judicial review application was rejected by the High Court on December 22, 2025, and Najib withdrew his appeal against that ruling in April this year.
