In a recent interview on the "Keluar Sekejap" podcast, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob addressed ongoing discussions regarding Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s legal battles, clarifying that Najib never sought personal intervention for his release during Ismail Sabri’s tenure as Prime Minister. Instead, Najib reportedly only requested a fair judicial process.
Ismail Sabri's remarks come amidst renewed calls from Umno for a pardon for Najib, who was convicted in the High Court for his role in the SRC International Sdn Bhd scandal. Ismail Sabri, who served as Prime Minister from August 2021 to November 2022, stressed that despite the political pressures and his own party's stance, he remained committed to maintaining judicial independence.
During his podcast appearance, Ismail Sabri shared that Najib, who was already facing the Federal Court during his term, had never asked for a special favor or release. Instead, Najib expressed respect for the legal proceedings. "Najib did not request for an early release; he only asked for a fair trial," Ismail Sabri said. He emphasized that his role as Prime Minister required him to uphold the principle of separation of powers and to avoid any interference with the judiciary to preserve Malaysia’s credibility with foreign investors.
Ismail Sabri's comments are particularly relevant in light of Umno’s current push for Najib’s pardon. At this year’s Umno general assembly, the party has strongly advocated for a full pardon and release of Najib. Umno Secretary-General Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki highlighted that securing a pardon for Najib remains a significant priority for the party. He encouraged delegates to utilize their "most powerful weapon"—prayer—to aid in Najib’s release.
Umno’s continued support for Najib is underscored by the fact that many delegates still regard him as a distinguished leader despite his corruption conviction involving RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd, and his ongoing trial related to the 1MDB scandal, which has resulted in substantial financial losses for Malaysia.
In contrast, Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil reiterated the importance of adhering to legal processes regarding pardons. He stressed that any consideration for a pardon must follow due legal procedures and not be influenced by political pressure.
The debate surrounding Najib’s case reflects broader concerns about the integrity of Malaysia’s judicial system and the influence of political considerations on legal matters. Ismail Sabri’s emphasis on maintaining judicial independence serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between political considerations and the rule of law, crucial for sustaining investor confidence and upholding democratic principles in Malaysia.
