In a recent development in the 1MDB trial of former Prime Minister Najib Razak, investigating officer Foo Wei Min from Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) revealed that a significant portion of the funds received by Najib in 2013 were allocated for political purposes, rather than personal use.
Foo Wei Min, who was assigned to scrutinize Najib's receipt and utilization of funds dating back a decade, previously disclosed that he had traced the money trail from a US$3 billion bond raised by 1MDB for the development of the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX). It was found that a portion of these funds had entered Najib's personal accounts.
During the trial, Foo disclosed that the recipients of funds from Najib were primarily individuals or entities with a political background. Notably, between August 2 and 14, 2013, Najib issued five cheques amounting to RM20 million to Umno, with Umno Batu Kawan receiving an additional RM100,000. Other beneficiaries identified by the witness included Lim Soon Peng (RM246,000), Orb Solutions Sdn Bhd (RM2 million), and Semarak Konsortium Satu Sdn Bhd (RM303,000).
When questioned by lawyer Shafee Abdullah about whether Bukit Aman had traced any transactions related to Najib's personal expenditures, Foo confirmed that no such expenditures were identified.
In a light-hearted exchange, the lawyer jestingly inquired, "There was no spending from him to buy a yacht?"
Najib currently faces 25 charges of abuse of power and money laundering pertaining to alleged 1MDB funds totalling RM2.28 billion, which were deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.
This revelation sheds new light on the utilization of the funds in question, painting a picture of a political allocation rather than a personal indulgence. As the trial continues before Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah, the distinction between political and personal use of these funds will likely play a crucial role in the proceedings. The case serves as a focal point in Malaysia's efforts to address issues of financial mismanagement and corruption at the highest levels of government.
