Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was granted a conditional pardon by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until 23 August 2028.
As previously reported, the conditional pardon requires Najib to pay a RM50 million fine and comply with the conditions imposed.
Najib in “difficult position” after unable to pay RM50 million fine
Messrs Shafee & Co. later issued a statement on behalf of their client, Najib, explaining that the house arrest could only be implemented if he complied with the stipulated conditions. This includes remaining at Kajang Prison until the RM50 million fine is paid to the court.
In a recent development, Najib’s lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, said his client was unable to afford the fine as his bank accounts had also been frozen.
“He is in a difficult position because he is supposed to pay it, but he does not have the money,” he said.
Muhammad Shafee said Najib’s bank accounts had been frozen, including his Affin Bank account, which was used to receive his salary as Prime Minister and Member of Parliament.
When asked by Harian Metro about the amount collected in donations so far, he said he was unaware of the figure as it was outside his area of responsibility.
