Former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak confirmed in recent court hearing that he had visited 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s (1MDB) corporate office in 2010, contradicting his earlier testimony in which he claimed never to have entered the premises.

The 71-year-old, currently on trial for power abuse and money laundering charges involving RM2 billion linked to his personal accounts, acknowledged photographs presented by the prosecution showing him at the 1MDB office during its launch.

During the proceedings, deputy public prosecutor Kamal Baharin Omar reminded Najib of his earlier testimony, where he swore by a verse in the Quran to speak the truth, even if it implicated himself. Kamal also highlighted Najib’s previous assertions in court that he had “never set foot” in 1MDB’s office.

Confronted with these statements, Najib initially maintained that his recollection did not align with the allegations. “As far as I recall,” he said, before adding, “I don’t remember,” when Kamal suggested he had indeed been to the office.

However, the presentation of several photographs ultimately led Najib to confirm his presence at the 1MDB office in January 2010. The images, sourced online, included a picture of Najib officiating the opening ceremony and signing a plaque to mark the event.

Najib acknowledged the authenticity of the photographs, admitting that they depicted him during the office’s inauguration. “I only went for the opening ceremony,” he clarified. “No other matters, just the opening.”

The photographs showed a signing ceremony dated January 11, 2010, directly linking Najib to the 1MDB office. This admission raised questions about Najib’s earlier attempts to refute power abuse charges, which alleged that he had taken actions at the 1MDB office.

Najib’s legal team has previously sought to challenge aspects of the charges, emphasizing his purported absence from the office. His acknowledgment may complicate this defense, adding a new layer of scrutiny to his trial.

The 1MDB scandal, which involves allegations of large-scale corruption and misappropriation of public funds, has become one of Malaysia’s most high-profile cases. Najib continues to face mounting evidence in court, with recent proceedings serving as a pivotal moment in his ongoing legal battles.

As the trial unfolds, the revelations about Najib’s presence at the 1MDB office during its launch could have significant implications for the prosecution’s case and the former prime minister’s defense strategy.
