The Unity Government may encounter challenges in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16) if Datuk Seri Najib Razak is released before the national polls, according to Dr. Syaza Farhana Mohamad Shukri, an Associate Professor of Political Science at the International Islamic University Malaysia. Expressing concern, she mentioned that if Najib campaigns with Pakatan Harapan for GE16, the opposition might capitalize on the situation, persuading voters that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is incapable of combating corruption.

Dr. Shukri emphasized that the opposition could exploit the narrative that the Prime Minister is ineffective in addressing corruption issues, despite the government asserting that it is within the former king's prerogative. The recent discharge, not amounting to acquittal, of Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his Yayasan Akal Budi corruption case adds complexity, raising concerns about the government being perceived as compromised.

While acknowledging potential negative public reactions, Dr. Shukri noted that some might view halving Najib's sentence as preferable to a full pardon. The Pardons Board's decision to reduce Najib's 12-year jail term to six and lower his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million stirred controversy. If the fine remains unpaid, it could extend Najib's prison term to August 23, 2029.

Despite facing criticism, Zahid has advocated for strong cooperation between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional beyond GE16, suggesting that the Unity Government intends to continue working together for the polls. However, political analyst Bridget Welsh expressed concerns, stating that the Pardons Board's decision undermines the rule of law, investment confidence, and trust.

Contrastingly, Professor Dr. Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, a political analyst at Universiti Utara Malaysia, believes that people will not react negatively to the government's decision. He argued that the board's fair review, which reduced Najib's sentence and penalty with conditions, aligns with the legal right to appeal for pardon guaranteed to everyone.

In essence, the Pardons Board's decision regarding Najib's case has sparked debates on its implications for the upcoming elections, with experts sharing divergent views on public perceptions and the potential impact on political dynamics.
