Former prime minister Najib Razak will be appealing against the court’s ruling after he was convicted on 25 corruption charges linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case.

As reported by The Edge, Najib’s defence lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said Najib intends to challenge the verdict, adding that final mitigation would only be made at the last stage of the legal process.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court found Najib guilty on four charges of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving more than RM2.3 billion today.

The court ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and that the defence had failed to cast doubt on the charges.

Throughout the trial, Najib maintained that the funds were political donations and that he had been misled by others. However, the court rejected this defence and ruled that it was not credible.

Najib is currently serving a six-year prison sentence at Kajang Prison following his conviction in the SRC International case.

According to Shafee, Najib will proceed with an appeal in an attempt to overturn the latest ruling.
