In spite of numerous appeals, the former prime minister, Najib Razak, was convicted of embezzling RM42 million from SRC International and was consequently sentenced to 12 years in prison.
He was transported to Kajang Prison to serve out his sentence. Recently, he published a poem on his Facebook page to mark his one-year anniversary behind bars, in which he detailed his feelings and daily activities.
"I still sleep on the cold cement floor," Najib writes in a poem about his year-long in prison.
According to Weird Kaya, the poem appeared as a four-stanza poem in the post's title and portrayed Najib's emotions and actions during the course of his previous year in prison.
"As I pray five times a day, imploring God for His mercy to lessen my burden, prayer rugs have become my constant companion.
"I would read the Koran in the silent and tranquil night," he said, “When daytime finally turns into night.”
Despite believing that God was always with him and would "never desert his servants," Najib nevertheless claimed that he experienced loneliness in prison.
Within four hours after the post was published, it received more than 60,000 reactions, in which netizens expressed their sadness over Najib's poem and urged him to be patient.
Hang in there, Najib. Other convicts might have written a poem too, but they can’t post it online!
Najib's full poem in Bahasa Melayu:
365 hari telah berlalu pergi
Di sebalik tirai besi
Beralaskan dinginnya lantai simen
Tikar sejadah menjadi teman
Sujud
Mengerjakan solat lima waktu
Merayu belas kasihanNya meringankan ujian beban
Mendoakan ketenangan, kebebasan derita
Di subuh
Menanti sinar mentari pagi
Menembusi jendela tirai besi
Di waktu senja bertukar malam
Hening dan sunyi
Mengalunkan Al-Quran
Berzikir dengan hati
Keseorangan.
Walaupun tahu Allah sentiasa ada
Tidak akan pernah meninggalkan hambaNya
365 days have passed and gone
Behind the iron curtain
On the cold cement floor
The prayer mat becomes a companion
Prostrating
Observing the five daily prayers
Begging for His mercy to lighten the burden
Praying for tranquillity, freedom from suffering
At dawn
Awaiting the morning sunlight
Penetrating through the iron-curtained window
As evening turns to night
Silent and still
Reciting the Quran
Engaging in remembrance with the heart
Solitude.
Though knowing Allah is always present
Never abandoning His servant
