In September 2017, then-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak's stay at the Trump International Hotel in Washington DC raised eyebrows as Malaysian taxpayers unwittingly footed a bill of RM1.157 million.

The extensive expenses, detailed in a report by the US House of Representatives’ Committee on Oversight and Accountability, included a US$10,000-per-night presidential suite, personal trainer fees, butler service, and extravagant room rates that caused a 70% spike in the hotel's average nightly revenue.

This lavish spending occurred at a critical juncture when Najib faced intense scrutiny over his alleged involvement in the multi-billion dollar 1MDB financial scandal. Despite a looming US Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into the 1MDB affair, Najib's meeting with then-President Donald Trump at the White House avoided any mention of the probe.

The report revealed Malaysia also covered the expenses of Trump fundraiser Elliott Broidy and his associate Nickie Lum Davis, who stayed at the same hotel. Broidy's subsequent guilty plea outlined his efforts to persuade the Trump administration to end the 1MDB investigation, shedding light on the intricate web of influence.

The overlap between political dealings, personal expenses, and international intrigue becomes even more pronounced as the DOJ repatriated over US$1.2 billion to Malaysia by August 2021. Meanwhile, Najib, convicted on charges related to 1MDB, serves a 12-year sentence.

The committee's findings highlighted a broader issue – Trump's businesses receiving substantial payments from governments, including Malaysia, potentially violating the US Constitution's Foreign Emoluments Clause.

This underscores the intertwining of political power and business interests, prompting a reevaluation of ethical standards and transparency in international relations.

As we reflect on Najib's opulent stay at Trump's hotel amid the 1MDB scandal, it raises essential questions about the ethical boundaries of political engagements, especially when public funds are involved.

Well, it's the BossKu, you know.
