KUALA LUMPUR — The Selangor state government has urged authorities to investigate the organisation of the ‘Glamping with Pride’ programme, an LGBT-themed camping event scheduled to take place next week.

State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the state government would not compromise on any attempts to spread or promote lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender culture in Selangor.

“The state government will not compromise with any efforts to spread and promote deviant culture and values that are contrary to societal norms.

“I have contacted the police and requested that the authorities conduct an investigation and take appropriate action,” he said in a statement last night, as reported by Bernama.

The two-day programme, organised by a pro-LGBT group known as Jejaka, is scheduled to be held in Hulu Langat on January 17 and 18. It has been described by organisers as a community-based retreat focusing on well-being, peer support and health awareness.

Organiser vows to proceed

The programme has drawn objections from various quarters, including Selangor PAS, the Bersatu women’s wing, Islamic NGO Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM), and Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA).

Despite the objections, Jejaka has vowed to proceed with the camping programme, Sinar Harian reported.

“The programme is being held at a certified camping ground and does not go against any law. Camping, gatherings and community education are legitimate activities in this country.

“At a time when Malaysians are facing pressing issues such as the rising cost of living, corruption and public health concerns, it is disappointing to see political power being used to attack a small group of LGBTQ individuals who simply want to spend time enjoying nature,” the group said in a statement.

Jejaka added that participation would be limited to strictly vetted attendees to ensure safety, and that all planned activities would comply with Malaysian laws. — January 10, 2026
