THE appointment of former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan as Chair of the Malaysian Media Council (MMM) is expected to strengthen public confidence in the newly established media regulatory body, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said.
Speaking at the culmination of National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2026, Anwar said Nallini’s background in the judiciary, along with her record of independence and integrity, sends a strong signal regarding the seriousness of the media council’s mandate.
“Her appointment gives the impression and signal that this Media Council is very serious. She has a background and record from an independent and integrity-driven judiciary.
“With her qualifications and highly convincing record, it will help provide a new image and confidence for the Malaysian Media Council,” Buletin TV3 reported him saying today.
Anwar said the MMM is expected to play a key role as a bridge between media practitioners, the public and the government in strengthening a responsible and free press environment.
“A successful nation is one that allows the flourishing of ideas. But it must be grounded in values.
“Integrity is not merely words; it must be translated into every news report,” he said.
The Prime Minister stressed that the media must continue to operate as a free and courageous institution capable of holding those in power to account, but said such scrutiny must remain anchored in facts and journalistic ethics.
At the same time, Anwar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding press freedom, provided it is exercised within the framework of law and moral responsibility.
He said a mature democratic society depends on a media landscape that is both free and responsible, where constructive criticism is encouraged but must remain fair, factual and ethical in nature. - June 20, 2026
