Nanta acknowledges severity of Sarawak floods

THE recent floods in central Sarawak saw floodwaters reaching the rooftops of schools, said federal Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who today noted that the flood woes have become more devastating than ever before in the state.

Nanta, who is Gabungan Parti Sarawak secretary-general and Kapit MP, is the second senior Sarawak politician in the past week to publicly acknowledge the severity of the floods.

“I have just concluded a visit to flood-hit schools in Kapit and I heard from teachers and students that the recent floods had reached the rooftops of their schools.

“Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Bena and SK Rantau Panjai were so badly damaged, they are no longer safe for use. Another round of floods will see these schools swept away.

“These schools need to be rebuilt or relocated to safer grounds,” he said.

Nanta said he is liaising with the Kapit local authorities and Education Department officials to render help to the affected students and teachers while planning the next course of action.

On August 26, Progressive Democratic Party president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing had acknowledged that the people living in flood-prone regions in Sarawak are suffering badly due to the floods which were getting from bad to worse.

Tiong, who is federal Tourism Minister and Bintulu MP and state assemblyman for Dudong, had then taken to social media to publicly express his sympathy for those who have to endure miseries so often due to the constant floods.

Tiong personally went to the flooded areas in Sibu district to see and feel for himself the problems caused by floods. – September 2, 2024.
