Napoli threaten Romelu Lukaku with disciplinary action after the striker stayed in Belgium for treatment instead of returning to the club.

NAPOLI have threatened Romelu Lukaku with disciplinary action after the striker decided to stay in Belgium for treatment on an injury.

The club issued a statement on Tuesday confirming the forward had not responded to their call to return to training.

“Romelu Lukaku has not responded to our call to return to training,” said Napoli.

“The club reserves the right to take appropriate disciplinary measures, as well as to review the player’s continued involvement with the squad.”

Lukaku withdrew from Belgium’s recent World Cup warm-up friendlies last week due to a hip issue.

He explained on Monday that he had inflammation and fluid on his hip flexor muscle.

“I chose to do the rehab in Belgium… (But) I could never turn my back on Napoli, never,” said Lukaku.

His season has been severely disrupted by injuries, starting with a hamstring problem in pre-season.

He did not return to competitive action until January, making just seven appearances for the Serie A champions this term.

Napoli’s title defence has been tough, as they currently trail league leaders Inter Milan by seven points.

They host second-placed AC Milan on Easter Monday hoping to leapfrog the seven-time European champions.
