Nathan Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary box office predictions revealed

Nathan Fielder’s much-hyped documentary about convicted fraudster Elizabeth Holmes is aiming for a strong opening weekend at the box office.

A24’s You Can See Everything is projected to make between $7 million and $8 million from just 800 locations after its theatrical release this Friday, according to Variety.

That would be a successful opening weekend considering You Can See Everything cost around $7 million to produce. Experts are already predicting it could become a rare breakout documentary in box office rankings due to the pre-release buzz surrounding the project.

The documentary, directed by Fielder and Primetime’s Lance Oppenheim, depicts Holmes at her California home just days before being sent to prison on multiple counts of defrauding investors and committing wire fraud through her blood-testing startup Theranos.

Holmes was convicted in January 2022 on four counts of fraud and conspiracy for lying about the capabilities of her biotech company’s blood testing technology and conning investors, who included Rupert Murdoch and Larry Ellison, out of millions of dollars.

Holmes began serving her 11-year sentence in May 2023 at a federal prison in Texas. Her listed release date at the Federal Bureau of Prisons is currently March 19, 2032.

In September, You Can See Everything released a new trailer for the film, in which an unblinking Holmes told Fielder: “I don’t have anything to deceive you on. Of course I’m not deceiving you. I’m engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There’s no reason for me to do that.”

The movie has already received glowing reviews. The Guardian called the documentary a “modern masterpiece of deceit,” while The Daily Beast wrote in its review: “Not just the film of the year – it’s a documentary that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the form’s all-time greats.”

While You Can See Everything is expected to draw an audience, the biggest box office success this weekend is expected to be Paramount’s video game adaptation Street Fighter, which has opening weekend estimates of $25 million to $35 million from 3,500 North American theaters, according to Variety. Street Fighter carries the biggest budget, with video game developer Capcom co-financing the film for $82 million, while Paramount only pays for distribution.

Disney’s survival thriller Whalefall, costing $60 million by comparison, is expected to secure second place with between $10 million to $12 million from more than 3,000 movie theaters. It follows a scuba diver (Austin Abrams) who is swallowed by a whale and must figure out how to escape with only one hour of oxygen left in his tank.

Focus Features’ remake of Jane Austen’s novel Sense and Sensibility is targeting $5 million to $8 million from 2,436 screens in North American theaters.

You Can See Everything is released in U.S. theaters October 16.
