MALAYSIA’S unique multicultural peace must be zealously protected as a foundation for the nation’s progress, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today, highlighting the country’s diverse population of more than 34 million.

Speaking at a Chinese New Year celebration at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Chong Hwa Kanthan Baru, Anwar emphasised that Malaysia’s ability to remain peaceful despite its ethnic diversity sets it apart.

He said the performances of traditional dances during the festivities symbolised unity through cultural diversity.

“We want to show our society, our children, that if Malaysia is to advance, to have easier livelihoods, stronger economic growth, better education and improved healthcare, we must keep this nation at peace.

“Number one, whatever happens, must be peace. If we quarrel, even a rich state will be ruined. So the spirit of Gong Xi Fa Cai, this Year of the Horse, means this year is ‘ong’ (fortunate),” he said.

Anwar’s remarks came alongside the presence of Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.

At the same event, Anwar presented a cheque worth RM500,000 from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. The funds are earmarked for road resurfacing, upgrades and repairs to public amenities and homes in Kampung Baru Kanthan. - February 15, 2025
