National Address System could unlock RM2 billion in value and 2,000 jobs, says minister

THE National Address System (NAS) has the potential to generate RM2 billion in economic value and create more than 2,000 jobs within the next five years, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking at the National Address Conference 2025 today, Fahmi said the NAS initiative, led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is designed to establish a comprehensive, standardised and verifiable address database for the entire country.

“Although Malaysia is estimated to have around 12 million addresses, there is currently no single entity with full coverage,” he said. “Most existing data is decentralised, unverified and lacks standardisation.”

NAS will assign each address a unique geocode and location identifier, based on standards set by the Department of Standards Malaysia. The system is expected to enhance services across both public and private sectors — from logistics and courier deliveries to disaster response and infrastructure planning.

“In flood or fire emergencies, NAS allows rescue teams to locate victims faster and with greater accuracy,” Fahmi said. “For businesses, especially in e-commerce and logistics, the use of precise, verified addresses will reduce delivery errors and improve efficiency.”

He described NAS as a “Needle Mover” under both the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint and the National 4IR Policy, aligned with the MADANI Government’s digital transformation agenda to position Malaysia as a high-income, tech-driven economy.

“The socioeconomic benefits are substantial — not just improved productivity and delivery of services, but also job creation and enhanced national competitiveness,” he added.

Fahmi was joined at the conference by Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching and Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.

The minister also highlighted the real-world consequences of Malaysia’s current fragmented address system, pointing to delayed shipments, slow emergency response, and inefficiencies in public infrastructure rollout as examples of the urgent need for NAS.

With Malaysia’s address base expected to expand significantly, Fahmi said the implementation of a centralised system is crucial in accelerating digitalisation and public sector reform. - July 17, 2025
