In a move set to transform the way assistance is distributed during crises or natural disasters, Malaysia is gearing up to implement its National Digital Identity (Digital ID) system. This initiative aims to streamline the verification process and enhance the distribution of aid, ensuring prompt and accurate assistance reaches those in need.

According to Datuk Ahmad Noordin Ismail, Chairman of the Malaysian Cyber Consumer Association (MCCA), the Digital ID holds the potential to significantly reduce bureaucratic hurdles. By facilitating the efficient distribution of government subsidies, it promises to target specific groups more accurately and effectively, ultimately easing the struggles of citizens in accessing the benefits they deserve.

Speaking to Bernama, Ahmad Noordin emphasized the system's benefits in the context of providing financial aid and government subsidies. He highlighted the speed at which targeted aid could be delivered, underscoring the positive impact on people facing difficulties.

The Digital ID, a form of digital self-identification and authentication, is designed for use in both public and private sectors to verify user identities during online transactions. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim clarified that while registration with the Digital ID is currently optional, civil servants are encouraged to register as the Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) and other targeted subsidies will be channelled through this system. The implementation is entrusted to MIMOS Berhad, with an initial allocation of RM80 million.

Ahmad Noordin, who brings his expertise from serving as the Principal Assistant Director at Bukit Aman, explained that in the cybersecurity realm, Digital ID utilizes digital certificate technology to enhance online transaction security. This involves verifying identities by linking cryptographic keys with their owners through cryptography.

However, he cautioned against potential exploitation of Digital ID by third parties for fraudulent or illegal activities, raising concerns about the system's security. Stressing the importance of robust security measures, he urged the government to safeguard the system's integrity and maintain public trust.

"MCCA supports the aspirations of Digital ID for the well-being of Malaysians. However, this system must have integrity and consistency to prevent its misuse by irresponsible parties, thus increasing the public’s confidence in the government," Ahmad Noordin emphasized.

In addition, he highlighted the need for comprehensive digital education to ensure that all segments of society can fully benefit from Digital ID. This, he argued, would help prevent digital divides and contribute to the long-term success of the country’s digitalization initiatives.

As Malaysia takes strides toward a more streamlined and secure digital future, the implementation of the National Digital Identity system marks a significant step in revolutionizing aid distribution and fostering a digitally inclusive society.
