Tourists in Washington will be able to immerse themselves in the exploration and discovery of planet Earth from late June onwards at the new Museum of Exploration, backed by the National Geographic Society, the organization behind the National Geographic magazine.

The museum on the society's campus, not far from the White House in the heart of the US capital, has been completely redesigned at a cost of more than $300 million, according to the National Geographic Society, with the aim of "inspiring the explorer in every visitor."

Using augmented reality (AR), visitors can use their smartphones to step into the role of a nature photographer and photograph virtual animals in their natural habitat - just as renowned photographers such as Joel Sartore have done for the magazine, which is known above all for its groundbreaking nature photography.

Such images are also displayed in the museum on large-scale, interactive projections designed to draw visitors in. There are also insights into research work, the planning of expeditions and how the impressions gathered in the field are ultimately turned into feature reports.

Adult tickets start at around $30, while children and young people aged 5 to 17 and all visitors aged 65 and over pay slightly less. Prices are dynamic and also depend on demand on the day of the visit. Children under 5 enter free. Tickets are available online. The museum opens on June 26.
