THE National Museum of the Philippines lit up its façade in blue on Thursday, Sept. 24, to commemorate the World Maritime Day along with the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
This move was part of the IMO’s “Light Up the World in Blue” initiative that invited governments and maritime groups worldwide to light up famous landmarks and buildings in blue on World Maritime Day.
The initiative’s goal is to “shine a light on the vital role of the maritime sector and promote safe, secure, green, and efficient shipping.”
World Maritime Day coincides with the Philippines’ annual Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo) with this year’s theme: “Karapatan sa Karagatan, Sama-sama Nating Alagaan,” voicing the continuous fight for our waters, marine ecosystems, and seafarers’ rights.
MANA Mo is observed every September pursuant to Proclamation No. 316, s. 2017, which promotes understanding of the Philippines’ maritime and archipelagic character and directs government agencies, LGUs, and the private sector to participate in related activities nationwide.
Nationwide maritime activities included the synchronized sounding of ships’ horn, agency exhibits, conferences, and conventions.
