THE Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) has underscored the critical role of local communities in preserving Malaysia’s river ecosystems through the National River Trails (Denai Sungai Kebangsaan, DSK) programme, launched in 2020 to enhance awareness and protect one of the country’s primary water sources.
Speaking at the official opening of the Langat River Trail in Kuala Langat, PETRA Secretary-General, Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli, highlighted the programme’s aim to cultivate a sense of ownership and shared responsibility among the public in maintaining the beauty and sustainability of Malaysia’s rivers, while also curbing river pollution.
“The DSK programme is designed to instil a sense of belonging, increase awareness and promote collective responsibility within communities to safeguard river sustainability and natural beauty, ultimately reducing instances of river pollution,” he said.
He added that beyond conservation, the creation and enhancement of river trails also stimulate local economic activity through river-based ecotourism and recreational opportunities.
Also in attendance was Datuk Ir. Mohamad Radzi bin Abdul Talib, Director General of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) Malaysia.
The Langat River Trail project, which began on 7 April 2025 and was completed on 2 June 2025, involved the upgrading of a 1.3-kilometre stretch of river trail.
Visitors can now enjoy a complete 2.6-kilometre loop situated beside the Paya Bakau Recreational Park in Kampung Sijangkang.
Once an illegal dumping site, the area has since been transformed into a hub for education and sustainable tourism through community collaboration.
For the year 2025, PETRA has implemented 35 DSK programmes nationwide, including six in Selangor.
The ministry also expressed its appreciation to the Selangor State Government for its close cooperation and continued commitment to the preservation and rehabilitation of rivers, in alignment with the sustainability and wellbeing principles of the Malaysia MADANI framework. - August 30, 2025
