Nationwide Aidilfitri prayers mark arrival of Syawal with unity, gratitude across Malaysia

MUSLIMS across Malaysia welcomed the arrival of Syawal by performing Aidilfitri prayers at mosques and surau nationwide in an atmosphere marked by gratitude and festivity.

From the National Mosque in the capital to places of worship in rural communities, good weather allowed congregants to begin gathering as early as 7am, filling mosques and surau, reciting the takbir collectively before proceeding with the Aidilfitri prayers and listening to sermons.

Bernam reported today that, Their Majesties Sultan Ibrahim and Raja Zarith Sofiah, King and Queen of Malaysia, performed the Aidilfitri prayers at Surau Utama Istana Negara.

Across the country, similar scenes of large congregations and royal attendance were observed in several states.

In Perak, His Majesty Sultan Nazrin Shah performed the Aidilfitri prayers alongside about 2,000 congregants at Masjid Ubudiah in Kuala Kangsar before visiting the Royal Mausoleum to pay respects at the grave of his father, Sultan Azlan Shah.

In Kedah, His Majesty Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah performed prayers at Masjid Zahir in Alor Setar with more than 2,000 congregants, joined by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and state executive councillors.

In Perlis, His Majesty Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail joined over 2,000 worshippers at Dataran Istiadat Istana Arau, with prayers led by state Grand Imam Amnan Wuthqa Azanol.

Also present were Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil and Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah.

In Terengganu, His Majesty Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and Sultanah Nur Zahirah performed the Aidilfitri prayers with more than 2,500 congregants at Masjid Al-Muktafi Billah Shah in Kuala Terengganu, attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and led by state Mufti Datuk Mohamad Sabri Harun.

In Pahang, His Majesty Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Tengku Ampuan Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah performed prayers at the Sultan Ahmad 1 State Mosque in Kuantan, accompanied by Tengku Mahkota Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.

In Selangor, His Majesty Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin attended prayers at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah.

In Negeri Sembilan, His Majesty Yang Dipertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir and Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud arrived at the Tuanku Munawir Royal Mosque in Kuala Pilah at about 8.28am to join more than 1,000 congregants, with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun also present.

Following the prayers led by Imam Abdul Rahman Ibrahim, Their Royal Highnesses greeted worshippers before departing for Istana Besar Seri Menanti to attend the Jamuan Rakyat.

In Johor, the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail performed prayers at the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque in Johor Bahru with more than 2,000 congregants, alongside Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, with the congregation led by state Grand Imam Muhamad Bukharuddin Ismail.

In Kelantan, Tengku Mahkota Tengku Muhammad Fakhry Petra performed prayers with thousands of congregants at Masjid Muhammadi Jamek in Kota Bharu, attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz.

In Penang, Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and his wife Toh Puan Raja Noora Ashikin Raja Abdullah joined about 5,000 worshippers at Al Bukhary Mosque in George Town.

In Melaka, Governor Tun Mohd Ali Rustam and his wife Toh Puan Asmah Abdul Rahman performed prayers with about 3,000 congregants at Masjid Al-Azim in Bukit Palah.

In Sabah, Governor Tun Musa Aman and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor joined thousands of worshippers at the Sabah State Mosque, with prayers led by the state Grand Imam Suhaidi Haji Kuanting.

In Sarawak, Governor Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg joined about 5,000 congregants at Masjid Jamek Petra Jaya. The gathering was followed by plans for an Aidilfitri open house at Astana Negeri Sarawak from 9am to 4pm.

In Putrajaya, more than 3,000 congregants began arriving at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque as early as 7.30am.

The mosque also drew foreign worshippers, particularly students from nearby universities, underscoring its role as a focal point for both locals and the international community.

Nationwide, the Aidilfitri prayers reflected a shared spirit of unity, gratitude and renewal as Malaysians from diverse backgrounds came together to mark the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Syawal. - March 21, 2026
