The recent proposal for a new legislative bill aimed at addressing anti-party hopping laws and introducing fixed parliamentary terms has stirred discussions at the highest levels of government. Fahmi, the spokesperson for the unity government, revealed that the initiative was brought forth during Cabinet deliberations. The underlying goal of this proposed legislation is to fortify the stability of the country's political landscape. In support of this proposal, Fahmi referenced similar legislative frameworks in other nations, such as the Fixed Term Parliament Act in the United Kingdom and the four-year term for the serving President in the United States.
Elaborating on the need for such legislation, Fahmi drew attention to the challenges faced during the 14th Parliament term, which witnessed a series of mid-term changes in the prime ministerial position. To encourage an open dialogue on the proposed bill, Fahmi underscored the importance of gathering opinions and perspectives on its necessity and applicability, drawing inspiration from the diverse practices observed internationally.
Addressing concerns about political appointments, Fahmi, who also holds the position of PKR information chief, provided a nuanced perspective. He clarified that the party's opposition is specifically targeted at political appointments to government-linked companies (GLCs) and not statutory bodies. This clarification became pertinent due to the scrutiny surrounding the appointment of Sangetha Jayakumar, Wanita PKR vice-chief, to the board of directors of the Port Klang Authority (PKA).
Sangetha herself confirmed her appointment through a Facebook post, prompting a wave of criticism on social media. This backlash was fueled by a tweet she posted in October 2020, criticizing the then Perikatan Nasional government for what she perceived as a political distribution of GLC positions. Acknowledging the concerns raised by the public, Fahmi expressed his commitment to bringing the matter to the Cabinet to ensure greater transparency in such appointments.
In a display of community engagement, Fahmi, also the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, concluded the event by announcing his intention to provide financial assistance for eye treatment or surgery to eligible B40 individuals in his constituency. This not only reflects his commitment to the well-being of the community but also underscores the practical initiatives taken to address specific healthcare needs.
