In his recent Facebook post, veteran journalist Datuk A. Kadir Jasin revisits the poignant warnings of Sheikh Abdullah Fahim, the paternal grandfather of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

These prophetic cautions, issued during Malaysia's independence in 1957, serve as an urgent reminder for the Malay community.

Kadir emphasizes the violation of the first warning, where numerous Malay leaders have exploited their positions, amassing wealth at the expense of the people. This not only erodes public trust but also undermines the very essence of leadership entrusted to them during the nation's formative years.

The second warning speaks to the peril of forgetting good intentions and succumbing to greed, even when cloaked in the rhetoric of religion and patriotism. Kadir contends that some leaders, despite invoking God's name, have strayed from noble intentions, leading to divine disapproval and societal repercussions.

As for the third warning, Kadir paints a sobering picture of a divided Malay community, weakened politically and economically. The subtle erosion of power and unity raises concerns about the community's ability to navigate the complexities of a changing landscape.

Quoting the myth of Hang Tuah, Kadir prompts us to question whether the resilience embedded in the Malay identity will endure in the Malaysian context.

The signs of societal fractures are becoming apparent, demanding a collective introspection to ensure the community's sustained presence and influence.

In confronting these challenges, Malays must heed these warnings as guideposts for a course correction. Leaders must prioritize the welfare of the people, maintaining the integrity of their intentions and upholding the principles of justice and equity. Unity, both politically and economically, becomes paramount to safeguard the community's future.

As Malaysia stands at this crossroads, the echoes of Sheikh Abdullah Fahim's warnings serve as a call to action. It is a call for Malaysians, irrespective of race or creed, to reflect on their shared responsibilities in building a just and prosperous nation.

The path forward requires a commitment to the principles of integrity, justice, and unity—a commitment that transcends individual interests for the collective well-being of the nation.

Sadly, I have yet to see that serious nationalistic commitment emerging from amongst the current crop of Malay leaders.
