Harley-Davidson has issued a large-scale recall affecting tens of thousands of motorcycles due to a defect that could lead to oil being expelled from the engine. The issue raises safety concerns for riders and maintenance handling, particularly when interacting with the engine components.

The recall, announced through filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), applies to a wide range of recent models. It follows another safety action by the company earlier this year, adding to scrutiny around mechanical reliability in some of its newer bikes.

Engine Pressure Defect Linked to Blocked Breather Port

The core issue involves a component within the air intake system known as the breather port. According to the NHTSA, this port may become blocked, which prevents proper ventilation and allows pressure to build inside the engine’s crankcase.

When this pressure is not released properly, it creates a risk during routine checks. According to federal regulators, if a rider removes the dipstick while the crankcase remains pressurized, oil may be forcefully ejected from the fill spout. This could lead to injury, particularly if the engine is still warm or under pressure.

The recall affects 88,039 motorcycles across multiple model years. These include 2024 to 2026 FLTRX and FLHX models, as well as 2025 to 2026 FXBR and FLFB bikes, among others equipped with a specific airbox baseplate component. According to NHTSA documentation, the affected part is identified as number 29000373.

Further reporting indicates that the blockage may be caused by a thin layer of plastic material obstructing airflow within the breather system. According to industry coverage of the recall, this obstruction can lead to several warning signs, including unusual pressure release when opening the dipstick, increased oil consumption, or visible smoke from the exhaust. Despite the scale of the recall, Harley-Davidson estimates that only a small percentage of motorcycles (around 0.4 percent) actually exhibit the defect, according to NHTSA data.

Inspection Program and Prior Recall Add Context

To address the issue, Harley-Davidson has instructed dealers to inspect the breather port on affected motorcycles. According to the NHTSA, any blockage found during inspection will be repaired at no cost to the owner. In many cases, no replacement parts are expected to be necessary.

Owners are expected to receive official notification letters beginning May 11, 2026, outlining the steps required to have their motorcycles inspected. The agency also notes that vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for affected units have already been made searchable through its database.

This recall comes shortly after another safety action involving the company. According to earlier reports, nearly 17,000 motorcycles were recalled in March due to a separate issue involving potential brake failure. That defect was first identified after a report of inoperable brakes on a 2025 model, prompting further investigation.

Taken together, the two recalls highlight ongoing quality control challenges affecting certain recent Harley-Davidson models. While no widespread injuries have been reported in connection with the oil ejection issue, at least one case has been potentially linked, according to recall documentation. For now, the company’s response centers on inspection and targeted repair, with regulators emphasizing the importance of addressing the issue promptly to reduce any safety risks.
