KOTA KINABALU: Torrential rain in the City last night caused flash floods in several areas, with Dah Yeh Villa facing unusually slow water recession that only subsided fully by mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Foong Hin, accompanied by Luyang Assemblyman Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, Likas Assemblyman Datuk Tan Lee Fat and Kota Kinabalu Parliament chief liaison officer Kaven Lee, inspected the Damai River Flood Mitigation Project pump station and urged more responsive measures to deal with such incidents.

Chan stressed that with climate change leading to increasingly erratic weather patterns, agencies must remain vigilant and improve disaster preparedness, noting the Meteorological Department’s forecast of more heavy rainfall in Sabah.

Phoong, who is also the Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister, directed the Irrigation and Sabah Drainage Department (JPS) to refine its operations after Deputy Director Irene Choo reported that 138mm of rainfall was recorded last night, nearly half a month’s average.

Separately, a landslide at Kampung Kopungit destroyed a home, although two residents managed to escape unhurt. Chan and Phoong later visited the family to deliver assistance.
