Kota Kinabalu: The State Government acknowledged the need to upgrade Sabah’s major airports, especially the Tawau Airport, but there is a bigger need for the airlines industry to focus on recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic first.

In recent years, there have been numerous calls for the Tawau Airport to be upgraded, especially in view of the district’s potential as a commercial hub, given its strategic location along Indonesia’s borders and being a gateway to world-class diving sites in Semporna.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) had initially carried out a Tawau Airport Master Plan Study in 2020 to identify the airport’s long-term needs until 2050.
