Kota Kinabalu: Efforts to upgrade roads in all areas in Sabah should be taken seriously and given huge allocations, said Bandau Assemblyman Datuk Wetrom Bahanda.

He said road network connectivity throughout the State, especially in rural areas, need to be looked into seriously because it is one of the basic needs of the people.

“Kota Marudu is among the 10 poorest districts in Malaysia but has agricultural products that are marketed to other areas.

“In order to overcome poverty, upgrading roads need to be implemented aggressively and not just in Kota Marudu, but also in the entire State and country because roads are a very important basic infrastructure.

“Road connectivity is not only for transportation purposes but also to improve the living standards and economy of rural communities as they can bring out their crops and livestock to be marketed outside the district,” he said when debating the 2023 State Budget.

He also called for the upgrading of the dual carriageway of Langkon to Pitas, Kota Marudu spanning 3.4km that can contribute to the development of Kota Marudu.

“In addition, the upgrading of Samparita road to Sonsogon Magandai, Teringai road, Mangin road and Rondomon Pata Tuhau road, which has already received allocations from the Federal Government, also needs to be implemented immediately.

“We understand that we have received approval from the Federal Government and I would like to request that it be implemented immediately for the convenience of our people,” he said.

Wetrom, who is also Kota Marudu MP, also emphasised the need to repair all critical equipment and other facilities as soon as possible, especially those involving health, medical treatment and medicine.
