Barisan Nasional (BN) must adapt to the evolving political landscape by prioritizing needs-based over race-based politics, said Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during the coalition’s golden jubilee celebration. In his address, Zahid emphasized that BN could no longer rely on its past achievements and must embrace reform to remain relevant to voters.
He outlined the need for BN to champion issues closer to the people’s hearts, such as the cost of living, education, and healthcare, as these resonate more with the electorate than traditional race-centric narratives. Zahid, also the Deputy Prime Minister, stressed that the coalition must rise above party-based egos and work inclusively for the nation’s future, especially in engaging with younger voters who are increasingly disillusioned with conventional political approaches.
The BN leader urged a proactive shift from defensive strategies, advocating for the use of technology, data, and social media to connect with modern voters. He highlighted that addressing pressing concerns like climate change, renewable energy, and the digital economy should be central to BN’s platform, aligning with the priorities of Malaysia’s younger generation.
Zahid further acknowledged the coalition’s need to reach out beyond its traditional voter base, noting that BN’s analysis revealed gaps in engaging with younger demographics. He encouraged members to embrace this challenge, emphasizing that progressive policies and inclusivity would be key to shaping BN’s future success.
On another note, Zahid expressed support for renaming SJKC Gamuda Cove to SJKC Ong Yoke Lin, as proposed by MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong during the event. Zahid described the move as a fitting tribute to Ong Yoke Lin, one of MCA’s founding figures and a member of Malaysia’s first Cabinet. He clarified that the decision should be seen as a recognition of historical contributions rather than a racially driven matter.
As BN marks its 50th anniversary, Zahid’s speech underscored the coalition’s determination to pivot toward relevance in a rapidly changing political and social environment. He called on all members to embrace this transformation for the betterment of the party and the nation, positioning BN as a forward-thinking coalition that addresses the real needs of the people.
